Recently I had the privilege and pleasure of returning to Northern Nevada Correctional Center where I had been a physician from 1987-2016. I remember that over 20 years ago I tried to get a hospice program in the prison and I'm so glad that Asst. Warden Lisa Walsh was finally able to pull it off.
18 inmates, many who I knew well from watching them in prison for decades, volunteered for the 6 week training done by volunteers from St. Mary's Hospice program. They will help take care of the inmates needing hospice in this four bed unit-- that looks and smells great due to the work the inmates were allowed to put into it.
I loved the croqueted afghans on each bed done by the inmates and the picturesque murals they put on the walls.
